I know. Again.
Quest for the first car continues!
What is your opinion on a 1987 Ford Escort XR3i Ghia convertible?
I found this nice looking one,
Roof was recently replaced, no rust, Ghia-edition, brand new safety inspection, 187.xxx km.
1.250 euro.
Opinions?

Are you an Essex girl ? They're just eighties Escorts with a folding roof, so not a great car, but one with some attraction - but at least in the UK, they have a worse image problem than bitch baskets.
If you are willing to trade possibly being laughed at for the fun of a convertible, you ought to be looking at reasonable maintenance and running costs. Don't know what your insurance would be like, but I assume you've checked it isn't through the roof because it's a convertible.
Now is a very good time of year to buy a convertible, so you ought to be able to negotiate a bit - better for the dealer to sell it a bit cheaper than to have it sitting on his lot until spring.

No rust on these are impossible! That said, it looks decent and for that price it's a cheap way to get some wind in your hair in the summer. NP, but I wouldn't buy it because Escort.

Lol great, I'm across the canal, Escorts are more used by bald guys in tracksuits blasting techno, often with cheap mods, like a silly exhaust, blacked lights, bodykits (unpainted of course) and boy racer rims like on this car, wich worries me a bit.
The oldtimer (26+ years) market took a big hit because of a change in law, so now everyone is getting rid of their once tax free car. They still have some sort of consolation law, wich is interesting for me . Insurance is a cheap classic insurance.
Reliability is strange of this car, from one side I hear that they are great and reliable cars, no worries.
And from the other side I hear that they are sort of a running joke, a rust bucket that breaks down everytime.
wich is it?
Also the the license plate, wich suggest that it was imported in the last 3 years worry me a bit.

I know everything is more expensive in Europe, but that seems like a NP as long as an inspection of the floors shows no rust.

Bit of both? It could be fairly reliable for an eighties cheap car, and also a rust bucket that breaks down.

The advert was somewhat strange. XR3i in the headline but pictures of a Ghia? There was no 4-speed manual in any '87 Escort Cabrio. So the one selling it doesn't know anything of the goods he's selling or is just inacurate, so the '187k' stated could easily be 287k (these had 5-digit odometers, with a reason). But most important: Did you ever drive one? Personally I didn't found any FWD Escort an impressive ride let alone one without a roof (expect a lot of squeeks from the body!)... Still cheap if the only thing you want is a convertible.

Hmm...
Later in the advert it says that it has a 5 speed manual, strange.. wich is it?
I did not drive one, simply because I don't have a license, I'm working on it.
some people in my family have had many later model escorts and keep telling exiting stories about them.
I have no experience driving anything, so I don't think I have any expectations.
From what I've heard, these escorts are not really that awesome as people make them out to be.
